University of Glasgow Health and Wellbeing Research Project

Multiplex has been working in partnership with the University of Glasgow to support academic research opportunities associated with the University of Glasgow Campus Development.

Working with the University of Glasgow’s College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, we have developed a research project focused on the health of the construction workforce at the Campus Development project.

Two undergraduate students, Gina and Julia, have been collecting research on the Campus Development workforce using a lifestyle questionnaire and basic medical tests such as height, weight and blood pressure. Staff from office and site and the project supply chain took part in the study. The purpose of the study is to collect information about the health and wellbeing of the men and women working in the construction industry.

Rather than deliver health and workforce engagements that are not relevant to those working on the project, the data collected can be used to help understand how best to develop interventions that may provide targeted support to workers to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

The resulting data has been analysed by academics and doctors at the University of Glasgow’s College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, providing Multiplex with a view of the health of the workforce on our project, including illness, pain, obesity levels and mental health.

The results showed that the number of smokers, obesity levels, hours spend sedentary were higher than the national average. However, blood pressure and diet was better than the average population. Data also showed themes the workforce wanted to find out more about which were diet quality and weight management.
