Use of CL:AIRE for Beneficial Reuse of Clean Naturally Occurring Clay
Naturally occurring minerals in the London Clay leaving site have resulted in the material being classified as Non-Hazardous instead of Inert, at almost double the cost to export as a waste product.
By using the CL:AIRE protocol their haulier is using the clay for beneficial reuse in a land raising project at Slough Cemetery. The cemetery is being extended and the adjacent land requires raising by 1.5m with 30,000m3 of material needed to do so. In using this protocol the costs of removal of the clean naturally occurring clay has reduced significantly and the material is no longer being treated as a waste.
This contributes to beneficial reuse for both companies, whilst reducing the costs of removal significantly due to savings in landfill taxes. They are also promoting the use of materials in the waste hierarchy; waste is being minimised, and waste that is produced is recovered and reused, reducing the waste sent to landfill.
