Use of coloured armbands to control exclusion zones

The nature of construction work poses a number of potential risks to the workforce.

It is vital to undertake a risk assessment and implement measures to prevent incidents, in order to ensure the safety of your workforce.

Below is an example of how a site safeguarded their workforce using exclusion zones:

  • Operatives who had been briefed on the additional risk of being in the exclusion zone were issued with a coloured armband;
  • Visitors to the exclusion zone had to receive a briefing about the additional risks and obtain an armband before entering;
  • Armbands were issued by the exclusion zone supervisor and had to be handed back upon leaving the zone;
  • Signage around the zone informed everyone that no entry is permitted without an armband;
  • Multiple exclusion zones could be managed on one site, by using different coloured armbands.
