Use of Floating Pump for Site Dewatering Activities

Over the winter period the project has had to manage water on the site. Due to the nature of the existing ground conditions, predominantly a Mercia Mudstone clay material, the run-off from excavation areas carries a heavy silt load.

To manage water on site, the project is utilising the permanent works drainage attenuation ponds, as well as temporary ponds, for the containment of run-off as required.

To manage water levels they need to pump water between ponds. To do this without pumping silt-laden water and clogging the pumps with silt from the bottom of these ponds, they have sourced from their supplier a floating pontoon to support the suction head of the pump just below the water’s surface in the ponds. The pontoon consists of a steel frame with sealed 45-gallon drums for flotation.
