For ground stabilisation and to provide a cut off wall during shaft construction the site team undertook soil mixing activities.

The use of soil mixing itself as a method to stabilise contaminated ground is not in itself new. Nor is the use of a cut-off wall to keep contaminated water out of an area.

The aspect of this work not employed before was the use of the cutter soil mixing to form a safe zone through which to telescope the d-wall shaft similar to the approach a GI contractor would adopt if undertaken “clean drilling” methods.

The use of 80% Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS) within the cementitious grout mix ensured that the geomix structure was delivered as sustainably as possible, saving approximately 410 tCO2e, while achieving its intended purpose. A similar process will now be taken forward as part of the future CSO works.
