Use of Press to Check Dust Masks

We have mandated the use of press to check style masks instead of disposable masks.

Exposure to construction dust remains one of the biggest causes of work related ill-health in our industry. While other control measures must first be implemented to eliminate or minimise the risk of exposure to harmful dusts or fumes/vapours caused by construction related activities, the use of appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is an important final means of protection.

Self-checking RPE is more comfortable for the user and so they are more likely to make full use of the mask. There is an improved protection for the user due to improved fit and ability to self-check the seal. The design makes it much easier to check whether it is being used correctly and to maintain it. They are also more cost effective – the general advice is that filters are replaced at regular intervals in line with your training and manufacturers’ instructions.
