We developed a scheme to replace existing end of life steel barrier in the central reserve of the M621 urban motorway in Leeds, with a non-deformable solution to reduce maintenance and accident repairs in the future.
The DB 80E deltablock can be used as a temporary barrier system when positioned on the carriageway and has comparable performance to all other temporary barrier systems on the market. However when placed in a permanent position it becomes a certified H2 W1 VI1 ASIB barrier system which exceeds the performance of the originally proposed slip-formed/ in-situ cast rigid concrete barrier.
By utilising the same barrier first in a temporary position to protect road workers during construction, and then switching to a permanent system, this solution had multi benefits including:
- Minimised disruption for customers as we didn’t need road closures to remove the temporary barrier at the end of the scheme
- Significantly reduced vehicle movements on site compared to a cast in-situ solution, as once the barrier was delivered to site that was it – we didn’t need multiple additional deliveries of concrete to site with all the additional lorry movements
- We reduced the overall duration of the works with reduced impact on adjacent communities and businesses from construction work, with a reduction in site operations through a significant sevenfold increase in productivity
- Transportation costs and CO2 emissions were reduced, with a 100% reduction in raw material use of the new barrier, as we used the temporary barrier as the permanent solution
