Using Audible Signage to Share Site Safety Information

Willmott Dixon have engaged with a local SME within 100m of the project to introduce static audible signage which, when activated by PIR sensor alert passers by of the site entrance, and the potential for moving vehicles within this zone. The alert is strategically placed before the entrance to ensure there is enough time for vulnerable road users and pedestrians to be alerted of moving vehicles and to be aware of the site entrance ahead.

As well as this, the site has utilised the signage further on site by updating the voice alerts to suit on site activities such as “Be aware, the crane is lifting overhead today” and “Please ensure you keep 2m apart at all times when on site” during the coronavirus pandemic.

There is often an issue around site signage where too much can create ‘Familiarity Sign Blindness’ and because of this, operatives can choose to ignore it, where as an audible stimulus increases the reaction in brain receptors by 1207% compared to a standard visual sign and has proven to be improving the awareness on site from feedback alone.

The audio sign is versatile and easily adapted to suit as works change, they can be moved around easily, powered by AA batteries and used inside and out.
