Using different colour barriers to separate areas of the site

Access points to the site should be secure and protected to ensure driver, worker and visitor safety.

Access to different areas of site should be appropriately controlled, with simple arrangements made to warn people of risks, but also obtain assistance as necessary.

This site used different coloured barriers to separate areas of the site, to reduce the risk of personnel entering unsafe working zones:

  • Blue – indicated a safe non-working area, where PPE was not mandatory;
  • Yellow – indicated an exclusion zone around a work activity, only accessible by those briefed on the works and carrying out specific tasks;
  • Red – indicated an exclusion zone which was not to be entered.
