GRAHAM Construction has been looking at how to give staff and managers insights into how they might understand themselves, colleagues and each other better. The business case for this being to maximise effectiveness and support performance in the workplace that focuses on an individual’s needs and abilities to achieve their best.
GRAHAM has trialled the use of DISC profiling during 2017 for all senior managers and a sample of staff throughout all layers of the business. After universal approval for the value that this added to their performance management planning and experiences it is being rolled out across the company.
A further cohort of staff have recently undertaken DISC profiling which will be utilised by themselves and their managers to support the performance management round commencing in September 2018. More cohorts will be brought on line throughout the next 12 months.
Staff and managers who participated in the pilot have reported that understanding their own communication and behavioural styles as well as their colleagues and managers has really made a difference in how they perform and work together particularly in periods of stress.
They feel better able to disagree constructively or reach compromises on ways forward that work for everyone because they have a better understanding of different perspectives as well as being more conscious of the impact of their own behaviours on others.
