Using trains in the delivery and removal of materials

Carillion Rail is in the process of reinstating the sidings at West Ealing. The full works involve removing the existing sidings and infrastructure, excavate down to the required depth, install bottom ballast and track, install rail and install and profile the top ballast.

Over the course of the project approximately 3,200 tonnes of soil and stones will be removed from the site in addition to approximately 200 tonnes of redundant rail, clips and sleepers.

The challenge was how to safely remove the waste from the bulk excavation works without increasing pressure on local residential streets and impacting local air quality.

A number of benefits were identified from this approach to waste management, these were:

  • Reduces scope 3 carbon emissions;
  • Reduces expenditure on new materials;
  • Diverts waste from landfill;
  • Removes vehicles from the road, reducing air pollution;
  • Reduces potential for nuisance;
  • Improves the safety of streets for pedestrians and cyclists.

More vehicles on the road also leads to more congestion and potentially more nuisance complaints. By removing 80% of our estimated waste by rail, congestion on the road is limited and total emissions lowered, improving the health of the local population.

The removal of materials by train saved approximately 73 tonnes of CO2e compared with removal by truck, avoiding 80% of CO2e emissions being produced.

It also served to remove 201 trucks from the road, reducing pressure on local infrastructure.
