Walking Piling Gate

Exceptional sites are those that seek new and safer ways of completing their project, keeping in mind efficiency and time constraints.

See the examples below for how one site addressed this:

  • The site civil engineering team developed a ‘Walking Piling Gate’ for installing large diameter cylindrical piles over water through the dock.
  • The development of this gate reduces the need for manual handling, as the traditional method involved burning and welding a frame at set-up. This ensures the safety of the workforce.
  • The use of the piling frame streamlines the traditional cycle time of placing successive piles, with an efficiency improvement of at least 75% achievable. Prior to the creation of the walking gate, the site anticipated driving 2.5 units per day but now easily achieve 4-6 units a day and have achieved 10 units.
  • This efficiency is due to minimising manual handling and the reduction in time spent positioning each gate template.
  • Eliminating the need for cutting and burning over water reduces the risk of contamination entering the water.
  • Less waste steel through manufacture and use is a direct result of the gate as it can be reused on multiple combi walls configurations. The reduction in fabricated steel lowers the project’s carbon footprint.

The walking piling gate is the first of its kind and has led to noticeable safety and efficiency improvements.
