Wayfinding ‘Z Guide’

The basement is full off small rooms (217 in total) and walkways. It used to be a challenge to navigate from point A to B without getting lost. Listening to the workforce, we developed signage that is easy to understand, professional looking (not just laminated paper) and colour coded – so even those who find it hard to read can get to their destination. The colours also correspond to the chain-link walkways used on higher floors.

The project is a complex development due to its physical size and technical challenges, which makes it daunting to new project team members. There was not an effective method of translating vital information in a practical and engaging way. Moreover, there was no system which provided condensed information that could be easily digested by all.

This prompted the creation of a Z Guide, which was provided to the project team to deliver key information in a unique and comprehensive manner as part of the site induction. It details all of the project’s key information in a small foldable document that is able to fit inside a wallet/ purse. Such information includes health and safety images, key responsibilities and a project map. This guide facilitates a smooth transition for new team members.

Key elements of the Z Guide include:

  • Hard hat colours
  • Site access information
  • Site policies
  • Wellbeing and health information
  • Site map
  • Contact information
