We teach English to our workers every week. We hold five English classes per week, two at an advanced level and three at a standard level. We thought if our employees are trying to learn our language, why don’t we also try to learn theirs?
We trialled “Words Wednesday” in our Head Office, and the feedback from our employees was very positive: they said it was very engaging and enjoyable. Now some of our sites are also running “Words Wednesdays” and so far it has being a great success. Some groups of employees get together on their lunch break and some stay back an hour after work. Some sites also use a language board. They use this board to write some phrases in another language and their meaning in English. This is displayed in the office and it’s an excellent way of getting people to learn and communicate with one another. Employees are making a great effort and are also really enjoying it.
We want to communicate effectively and build good relationships with our employees, we think nothing sends the message that we value the diversity of our employees more than our willingness to learn from them. We believe that people can achieve great things, when they all work together.
