Working at Night Using Glow Sticks to Direct Plant

During the recent works Balfour Beatty undertook on a project at Wick Airport, all the works were carried out at night due to the nature of the project.

Part of the work was the surfacing of the main runway edges at night during the quiet times of the airport, along with other civil works.

We came across a problem at this time with the vehicle marshals and banksmen trying to direct plant and vehicles.

A lot of the works were carried out under tower lights, which made it harder for the driver to see when reversing whilst facing a tower light or another machine directly behind them.

The main problem we had onsite were lorries reversing into pavers (tar machine) as this also had its light on, which then made it difficult for the drivers of the lorries to see the plant and vehicle marshals trying to bank them.

We tried various different solutions by changing the colour of the gloves that they had on etc.

We then came up with the idea of trying the glow sticks that they used to park the plane/aircraft at night.

This worked really well and done away with any issues we had and also any safety concerns.
