Breaks and Rest Periods

Topic Progress:

Frequent short breaks can reduce the risk of fatigue, improve productivity and performance, and enhance concentration, all of which can significantly reduce the risk of errors, accidents and injuries.

To improve productivity in the workplace, management can:

  • Consider allowing additional breaks if there are signs of fatigue amongst the workforce.
  • Provide adequate welfare facilities for people to rest and relax before going back to work.
  • Encourage individuals to take their full break entitlement to prevent the onset of fatigue.
  • If specific needs arise, offer flexibility with break schedules. For example, during Ramadan practicing Muslims may need different break times to manage the effects of fasting.
