Working with the charity Lives not Knives we created and delivered a new Construction Traineeship scheme including the provision of over 100 hours of work experience per student. We designed a schedule tailored to each individual’s preferences mimicking Willmott Dixon’s management trainee placements with each student spending time with a variety of different trades.
This programme acts as a stepping stone into construction for those who need the most support; all of the students have been referred to us. The majority of those on the programme are care leavers or refugees, their difficult circumstances so far in life has led to most also having been involved in criminal justice system. This programme has truly provided an opportunity to change young people’s lives in a substantial ways, opening doors to a future they could only previously have imagined.
To celebrate their success a graduation ceremony was held to honour learners for completing the programme. LNK and Willmott Dixon introduced the programme, explaining how and why it works. The learners then each gave their personal story and those involved for sharing the journey with them. Guest speaker MP Gavin Barwell shed light on the importance of new talent in construction as minister for housing and planning and presented certificates to the learners.
Due to the success of this programme it is being rolled out to five projects in Croydon with a new cohort of 16-17 year old students starting shortly.
