Mace have developed a ‘Business Travel Scorecard’ as part of their campaign to be a Net Zero Carbon business. By encouraging active travel and reducing unnecessary travel to their construction sites, the aim is to reduce overall carbon emissions and adopt healthy behaviours.

The document covers minimum compliance (mandatory actions) and best practice covering the following topics:

  • Travel to site: holding virtual meetings, avoiding unnecessary flights, using RealWare in lieu of physical site inspections, increased use of public transport, walking or cycling and use of carpool scheme or shuttle bus.
  • Site facilities: provision of electric vehicle charging points and/or e-bike charging points, provision of cycle storage and showers and priority car parking for those in a carpool scheme or who have electric vehicles.
  • Site activities: hosting cycle safety campaigns and bike surgeries, provision of posters encouraging active travel and information shared with site team about financial incentives (cycle to work scheme & cycle mileage expenses).
  • Innovations: project teams can submit actions which go above and beyond business as usual.

All completed items on the checklist must be evidenced and are assessed through a QA process. Projects can be awarded a ‘Best Practice’ for scoring 5 points on the scorecard, and an ‘Innovation’ if they score 8 points. Once the document is complete, it is then reviewed by the project team quarterly with new evidence provided to encourage continuous improvement.
