Traffic Management Using a 3D Site Model

At the Sports Park 2 scheme, Kier implemented a hand made 3D model which was created by the site team to demonstrate Traffic Management. The 3D model, when placed on the scaled drawing of the site plan, was found to be a brilliant visual display for inductions, daily briefings and demonstrating the particular difficulties in traffic management of the scheme.

To carry out the 3D model design the site team simply cut out the architectural scaled elevation drawings and stuck the cut outs on to card, which they then sellotaped together to create the 3D model of the building to be constructed.

This 3D model was then placed over a laminated site plan, which could then be drawn on using dry wipe pens. Standard sized items such as skips, vehicles, plant and office cabins could be then cut out of card and placed in many different areas to discuss all the options prior to lots of wasted drawings, sketches and time spent agreeing the correct work zones and traffic routes.
