Tunnel Plugs
Projects based in busy areas such as train networks need to be mindful of the safety of those around the site, ensuring that travel is not disturbed by the works.
See the examples below for how one site addressed this:
- The contractor wanted to keep the London Underground services running throughout the weekend while they removed existing tunnel rings as part of the work to connect new running tunnels and the step plate junction.
- The section of track and tunnel that needed to be closed was close to tracks where trains were running at normal speed. This raised a concern of dust and debris from the works being transferred through the tunnels into the live tube network.
- The team developed large inflatable tunnel plugs to fill the void in the existing tunnel and create a barrier between the worksite and the existing tunnels, preventing dust and debris from affecting the active rail line.
- The plugs can withstand 2Kpa pressure created from trains and can be fully operational within 45 minutes.
