Encouraging Deaf Students to Consider a Career in Construction

It is important to make the construction industry accessible to everyone and encourage new people into the industry.

Sites should encourage the younger generation to consider a career in construction, by providing opportunities for students to try new skills and learn more about different trades and opportunities.

Below is an example of how a site has achieved this:

  • Three site visits from six pupils from the Royal College for the Deaf have been made to both office and construction areas, with students showing keen interest in industry opportunities;
  • The first was to observe the site in a quiet period, in which the students gained some experience in bricklaying, carpentry, fencing and mechanics;
  • As requested by the students the site opened up opportunities to visit during full flow construction activities.
