Mace at Greenwich Square Block Three is committed to procuring products and services from social enterprises. A social enterprise directs its profit to solve a social issue, therefore, increasing our contribution to society.
As these organisations were not part of the key supply chain, we started small, identifying the ones that it would be easier to introduce on site.
We invited three social enterprises to site to celebrate UK Fairtrade Fortnight 2019. The aim of this event was to raise awareness of how we can support communities by purchasing from social enterprises and choosing Fairtrade products. This first interaction enabled us to introduce the social enterprise alternatives to everyone on site and also highlighted a further opportunity for use within our head office and our client.
Following this success, our project director and commercial team reviewed existing day-to-day products and services on site which could be procured from social enterprises. Timber removal and cleaning services were identified as being feasible opportunities for engagement with social enterprises and as a result, Community Wood Recycling and Tarem Cleaning services became the new providers.
Going above and beyond:
Since we started this movement, we managed to spend over 0.03% of our 2019 spend with 6 social enterprise companies, which is forecast to continue for the remainder of the project’s lifetime.
The project’s biggest achievement is helping transition (with agreement) two cleaners on from an agency to a social enterprise, giving them better income and shareholder opportunities.
