Utilising Tekla Model and Augmented Reality for Bridge Installation and Tensioning

Complex large scale projects inevitably present a wide range of challenges. The Tekla model was used extensively on this bridge prohect throughout in internal and external design meetings, critical in the design process.

SH Structures uploaded the model as an IFC file, which allowed them to pick any point on the model and compare it to the surveyed position. The SX10 has a built-in camera and they used the augmented reality function, where the model is displayed on the controller, with the physical bridge in the background using the slider bar to adjust the opacity of the model. Sections of the bridge were 3D-scanned and compared to the model within Trimble Business Centre.

The use of augmented reality to overlay the structure and model allowed them to work more efficiently. The use of the camera and overlay allowed alignment to be visually checked whilst the more detailed adjustments that could be achieved by surveying pin points on the structure allowed for increased accuracy (tolerance <10mm) and faster completion.

The efficiency of this process reduced the amount of time required to install the bridge, reducing disruption to surrounding communities.
