3D Printed Concrete Ditch Headwalls

The project team has been looking for an alternative for the construction of ditch headwalls. The usual method is to fill hessian sand bags with concrete and place them by hand.

This involves manual handling risks and working on slippery slopes while carrying the bags as well as the challenges of filling them. The site has teamed up with Weber to produce 3D printed concrete walls that are lifted into position in each ditch at the outfall.

This is a first of its kind in this region and is likely to transform this aspect of construction. The benefits include the saving of manual handling, risk of skin cement burns, and in the current climate social distancing challenges.
