Portland cement accounts for approximately 5% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. As the leading developer they have a responsibility to look for ways to reduce the impact our works have on both the local and global environment. Early discussions with the piling contractor, Keltbray, made the project team aware of Keltbray’s involvement in cement free concrete. As a result, 6no. anchor piles have been cast using a CEM-free concrete mix. The piles will be used to anchor the pile testing rig.

Completing these piles on site allows more data to be compiled about the concrete mix design from workability through to strength. The supplier sent out an engineer to collect testing cubes straight from the chute.

Cemfree is a proprietary alkali-activated cementitious material (AACM) that activates pozzolanic materials such as ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and pulverised fly ash (PFA) to create a Cemfree binder that can replace a variety of cement types to create Cemfree concrete. Using this as a replacement for Portland Cement has the potential to save up to 80% in embedded carbon.
