Dufaylite Clayboard

On this project, the team replaced traditional concrete blinding with Dufaylite Clayboard, a 100% recycled paper honeycomb void former.

This lightweight, sustainable material provides a structurally sound void beneath slabs, mitigating ground movement and clay heave without using concrete.

The switch eliminated around 5m³ of general concrete mix, reducing the project’s embedded carbon footprint by approximately 6 tonnes.

This demonstrated a new, practical way to address both ground stability and carbon reduction in one solution. By replacing high-carbon concrete with a recyclable void former, the team achieved structural integrity, simplified installation, and removed the need for COSHH controls. It highlights how sustainable materials can be integrated into core civil engineering practices without compromising quality or performance.
