Good communication between operatives is essential to the safety of all of those on site. In particular, it is helpful if operatives speak the same language to ensure clear understanding of instructions.

See the examples below for how one site addressed this:

  • The site went further than providing on-site language training for its foreign workers and instead worked with a local community college to provide a 12 week ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Skills for Life programme.
  • The course ran at two skill levels with lessons once a week – operatives’ time off was supported by the project, ensuring they did not lose any earnings while developing their language skills.
  • In addition to the safety benefits of the course, enhanced language skills also foster better collaboration and team working.

This initiative demonstrated a commitment to upskilling and developing the workforce while enhancing on-site safety.
