Enhancing Road Safety with a Bespoke Vehicle Inspection Mobile App

With the invention and introduction of a bespoke Mobile Vehicle Inspection app, McGee has enhanced daily vehicle inspections above and beyond Health & Safety regulations and Company Policy requirements by revolutionising historic paper-based systems.

McGee can therefore be confident that their highly trained drivers are inspecting their vehicles to the highest of standards, instilling confidence that every vehicle leaves their transport facility in the proper condition.

McGee uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology built into smart phones and tablets to deliver a historically paper-based process. Each vehicle is fitted with four ruggedized NFC tags which are located under the bonnet, on the nearside, off-side and inside the cab.

McGee has created mandatory fields in the intuitive digital form, and content is validated against a pre-defined criteria. Every driver has to scan their device against their vehicle’s NFC tags, promoting a full physical inspection of their vehicle. The Mobile Vehicle Inspection app is cleverly able to GPS track and record the vehicle registration and location of every single inspection, making the process fully auditable.

If the driver reports a vehicle defect when carrying an inspection, this can be noted down, and if applicable a photo can be taken with the app’s in-built photo capture feature to clearly identify the defect.

To help reduce administration time and speed up the resolution process, an automated defect management workflow is created to effectively track and resolve the issue promptly, reaching the Transport Manager within a matter of seconds. This robust and simple solution gives McGee a complete audit trail of the defect history and complete confidence that every vehicle is thoroughly inspected daily.

If there are no defects to report, the driver simply signs to say the vehicle has been checked and will ‘save and submit’ the report. To ensure compliance and total records management, the report is available to view in PDF format on the McGee content management system, and is also sent in an email to the driver.
