Offering the site office as a homeless shelter

Goodwill gestures to the local community go a long way towards improving the image of the construction industry. Getting involved with the community eases a site’s relationship with its neighbours and shows all the great things the construction industry can offer. Homelessness is one of the biggest problems facing the UK, and this site went the extra mile in its efforts to help the rough sleepers in their area.

See the examples below for how the site achieved this:

  • The project team offered the ground floor of the site office to sleep local homeless people during the night, including use of the toilet facilities.
  • The site office building includes a canteen which can cater for 30 people, where they can provide hot meals.
  • The project has support from local organisations and the police force.

Offering site facilities to homeless people outside working hours enables this site to offer practical assistance to rough sleepers. Charitable acts help make a construction site part of the community, thereby improving the image of the industry.
