Pollinator Champions

Pollinators are vital to creating and maintaining the habitats and ecosystems that many animals rely on for food and shelter. Worldwide, over half the diet of fats and oils comes from crops pollinated by animals. They facilitate the reproduction in 90% of the world’s flowering plants.

As part of this contractors World Environmental Week activity, sites were encourage to engage with the local community to promote the importance of pollinators and involve children in activities.

A Community primary school located in Bootle, Merseyside offering a caring and motivational learning environment to help shape their children’s futures benefited from a donation of planters made from surplus wood, organic and peat free compost and pollinator seed balls with instructions on planting.

The school were presented with these by the Liverpool Projects Community Liaison Officer and Harvey the new project bear.

As the Port Projects are with a secure industrialised environment, the Community Liaison Officer is working with nursery and primary schools in Liverpool, Heysham and Clyde and in total 12 planters are being placed to create Pollinator tunnels between each area.
