Remotely Monitoring Railway Lines

Balfour Beatty’s Hatfield Link Road Project involves the installation of a road bridge over a main railway line. Due to this, the site team were required to understand how their work could affect the rail’s stability and alignment/level.

The methods that have previously been used are required to take place during pre-planned possessions/line blocks during night-shifts. Due to its time-consuming nature, this work had the potential to delay the programme. It also introduced the workforce into a potentially unsafe railway environment.

To overcome these drawbacks, the site began using Senceive Track monitoring nodes. These nodes are able to remotely provide data that was previously gained by engineers surveying the track directly. 200 nodes can be installed during one night shift. Therefore, delays to the project are minimised and safety of the workforce is increased.

The monitors are also solar powered so the site’s energy consumption has not been affected.
