The SHE team working on the M23 SMART Motorways Project have recently implemented an initiative to improve the flow of information with regards to access and exit changes throughout the road works. Until recently, the team had relied on daily updates emailed out on a scale drawing, and the problem with that was that any changes throughout the day wasn’t being communicated.

We were constantly running a risk of members of staff and the supply chain holding on to an outdated version of the access drawing which could potentially cause chaos. With this problem in mind, two members of staff came up with the initiative to design and implement a visual board at the site exit in the main compound. The board stands at approximately four meters high and is positioned at the main gate, the board is updated daily and throughout the day if change occurs.

  • Gives one consistent message to the team and any visiting delivery drivers.
  • Gives live site information on the access/egress arrangements.
  • Updates can be done and communicated in real time.
  • The board is constructed of reflective material, so it can also be seen at night.
  • The board is situated in a prominent position at the main compound security gate ensuring that it is visible when leaving site.
  • The information provides improved safety through better communication meaning less chances of aborted manoeuvres in the TM enhancing public safety.
  • The live information helps with directing deliveries to the site work areas preventing confusion.
  • Reduction in aborted manoeuvres, reducing safety incidents, saving fuel, cost and time.
