Safety Poster Competition for Employees’ Children

Everyone involved in a construction site knows how dangerous it can be, and how important it is to follow correct health and safety policies. However, people can slip up or think ‘it won’t happen to me’. This company devised an innovative way to encourage operatives to seriously consider health and safety.

See the examples below for how the site achieved this:

  • Emailed all employees with details of a safety poster competition to be undertaken by operatives’ children
  • The competition was promoted as an initiative to ‘colour our sites with health and safety’
  • Children aged 4-12 were encouraged to participate by colouring in pictures depicting on site health and safety
  • The message was driven home as each image emphasised that children want their parents to be safe on site
  • Winners received a £10 book token and some of the designs were made into signs for display around site
  • The initiative also fulfilled elements of the site’s CSR plan, as it encouraged young people to think about ‘dad’s job’ and the opportunities in the construction industry.

Every image featured the tagline: ‘Think Safe, Work Safe, Home Safe’. This reminded operatives of their families at home and what would happen to them should they suffer an accident on site.
