Smart Surfacing for Visually Impaired

On one of its projects delivered under the Highways Term Maintenance Contract, Tarmac laid tactile surfacing with inbuilt sensors and embedded technology which gives information to visually-impaired people through their sticks and canes which also have sensors built into them.

This innovation was promoted from the early contractor involvement period by both the client and the contractor.

This type of surfacing provides a great benefit to the visually impaired by providing information which can relate to the presence of hazards or the approach of public transport or electric vehicles.
