Considering the Needs of Blind Neighbours

Careful consideration should be given to the impact your work will have on the surrounding community.

It is important to familiarise yourself with the local community and if any specific considerations or special requirements need to be accounted for.

Below is an example of how sites can adapt their practices to accommodate their neighbours:

The contractor identified that the Royal National Institute of Blind people (RNIB) was neighbouring the site, thus recognising the need to assess any vulnerabilities in relation to visitors of the RNIB;
In order to get a feeling for the importance of good site boundaries, the site manager walked the perimeter with two managers of the RNIB and a user with a guide dog;
He was given vision impairing goggles in order to simulate the feeling of walking the street with little or no vision, this experience allowed a robust site boundary to be established.
