Cyclists and Vehicle Drivers Learning From Each Other

Knowing how important cycling is in Walthamstow with the Mini Holland cycling infrastructure scheme, when we started a new project in Walthamstow, not far from Blackhorse Road tube station, we decided that we would do a road safety event to show local cyclists we are considerate to them but also allow them to have the chance to sit in one of our vehicles and understand what the driver can see.

Erith, who were working with us on site at the time, provided us with a “blind spot” mat so cyclists could understand where the lorry’s blind spots were. The cyclists were invited to then sit in the lorry cab and our driver was showing them the technology he has and what he can see to help them understand how to ensure they stay visible and safe when cycling.

The Metropolitan Police joined us at this event to offer bike registration to make returning stolen bikes easier, and security advice on ensuring bikes don’t get stolen in the first place.

Mamachari, the local bicycle shop were also present to provide guidance on safety and merchandise including ‘Bike Doctor’ (safety checks and bike repairs). Free refreshments were supplied by Wood Street Coffee Blackhorse Workshop.

The event was really well received by all who attended with many people popping in on their way home from work.
