Simulating a Trial to Reinforce Safety Messages

Safety policies should be reinforced and understood on site so that all personnel are aware of their importance.

See the examples below for how one site took this a step further:

  • To emphasise the importance of labelling live and dead electrical services properly, the site staged a mock incident.
  • This involved selecting a time when an electrocution incident was deemed to occur because someone was working on cabling that was incorrectly labelled as safe,
  • The same process was followed as if this had been a real incident with collection of data under the supervision of a qualified solicitor acting as an HSE officer.
  • All those involved were then subject to a ‘court case’ to identify what fault, if any, could be attributed.
  • Despite all paperwork being in place, the ‘court’ ruled that the site manager could be subject to imprisonment for a maximum of two years. The main contractor and subcontractors responsible for electrical and strip out work would be subject to high fines.
