Water Pollution Management and Mitigation
Wills Bros have demonstrated unique techniques when dealing with water management. The aim of this study is to provide a narrative to the water management and mitigation methods employed during the Maybole project and to discuss the end solution adopted to provide an example of best practice techniques for water management on construction sites.
A number of methods were adopted as per best practice guidance and Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) advice:
- Step 1 – Interception ditches with check-dams (hay bales and 20mm stone for filtration);
- Step 2 – Hy-tex silt-fencing for channelling water and filtration;
- Step 3 – Lined settlement ponds to attenuate water for optimum settlement;
- Step 4 – Geo-jute, silt mats, flock mats, ultra de-watering bags;
- Step 5 – Environmentally friendly flocculant gel blocs;
- Step 6 – aluminium Sulphate ‘Alum’ flocculant blocks.
The steps detailed above were individually trialled step by step as per guidance for water pollution mitigation. The final step demonstrates an effective initiative to treat and manage water pollution on out site.
