On The Broadway project, we have invested in a number of automated external defibrillators which are designed to be used by any persons on the project and are all registered with the London Ambulance Service.
On the project, we have many non-UK resident employees who do not understand the purpose of defibrillators and why we have them on hand in all of our high-rise towers currently under construction. With this in mind, the Project Director and Senior Safety Manager for the Broadway project decided that it would be a great reason to get our onsite Occupational Health Nurse out on the construction site and deliver free-of-charge defibrillator training to all operatives onsite, which entailed explaining the purpose of what one was and how it can be used to save a life. This was a shock to most in attendance, as they hadn’t realised the significance of the defibrillators, and any attendees that were not fluent in English were engaged via a translator.
As a company, having more staff trained and confident in using defibrillators has been incredibly beneficial, as the training also included some basic first aid and how to deal with incidents both at work and at home. The training saved the contractors any charges to deliver the training and also gave good interaction with the workforce who can explain the usage and purpose of the defibrillators to any new persons enquiring when joining The Broadway project.
