Deep Soil Mixing

The project used deep soil mixing to improve the bearing capacity of the site’s soil, (a mixture of heavy clay and peat), by mechanically mixing it with cementitious and other binders.

This avoided having to replace the soil with imported fill material. Not having to excavate and cart away unsuitable soil and import replacement fill material led to a significant reduction in lorry journeys on local roads.

This, in turn, has helped to reduce the project’s overall carbon footprint.

Approximately 7,500 tonnes of soil was stabilised over an area of nearly 2000 m2. The average depth of soil stabilised was 2 m.
