The Colne Valley viaduct, is designed to sit low in the landscape. Where it crosses lakes, jetties were constructed to support its build and to provide an internal haul road.

However, to remove these without damaging the viaduct would have meant costly, complicated, lengthy and impactful works. The contractor used a novel approach to remove these. Looking across the world for a crane to remove heavy planks and steelwork at a certain reach and height restriction, none existed.

The team had an idea to adapt a 90t long reach excavator. Working with their plant supplier, the adapted excavator was tested, and a new lifting charts created. This simplified the methodology of removal, minimised health and safety risk, reduced cost and environmental impact.
