Existing Steel Vehicle Restraint System Upgrade

This contractor and their subcontractors created a new solution to retain existing Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) foundations whilst raising the VRS by 180mm.

Typically, to raise VRS by 180mm the existing large concrete foundations need to be excavated and removed. This is a significant activity as existing VRS foundations are mostly large lumps of concrete and vary in shape and size, on average, each foundation on the scheme is a concrete cube 0.8m long, 0.8m wide, and 0.8m deep. In 80% of cases it’s also installed within an existing filter drain with proximity of other motorway elements.

The new solution allows them to leave the concrete foundations in place, cut the existing post, and install a new joint to increase the height to the required level.

This process made a reduction in programme length by 28 days, helped to avoid quality, health and safety issues, significant carbon reductions as existing concrete foundations can remain in place. Significant cost savings, currently estimated to be £91,000 were also made and this was a quieter method of working, reducing the impact on the community.
