Active Bystander Training

In conjunction with the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College, London, 40 members of staff have been given ‘Active Bystander’ training, which aims to empower people to challenge poor behaviours and bring about cultural change.

The training equips attendees with the 4 D’s Toolkit, which are strategies for intervention based around Direct action (directly intervene), Delay (wait for the situation to pass), Distraction (interrupt or change the subject) and Delegation (inform senior staff), and encourages staff to use these as a foundation to intervene and interrupt inappropriate behaviour.

The training focuses on assertiveness and communication skills, using real life examples and provides signposts where further support can be provided.
