The piling and civil works of the extension of the London City Airport are carried out while the airport remains fully operational. This poses two major safety and security constraints for the installation of the precast concrete units, some of them weighting up to 42 tons.

As a result, installation must be done from marine spread, since security and safety regulations of the airport restrict land access anywhere near the runway or the aircraft stands. There are also strict limitations to the height of the equipment that can be used in the proximity of the runway to ensure that operations remain within the transition zone (height limited zone referenced to the runway).

With the above requirements in mind, a specific low height gantry crane was designed and built for the project. The design of the Precast Placement Unit allowing rotation and precise positioning of the units reduced the interface with the operatives therefore reducing the safety risks inherent to lifting operations.
