Biodiversity Net Gain

This company wanted their project to have a Net Gain for Biodioversity. To do this they modelled their calculations using a tool which concluded the project had a 367.64% increase in ecological value.

The project began with a baseline ecology of:

  • Broadleaved Tree – Scattered (A3.1).
  • Scrub -Scattered (A2.2) – 0.12ha;
  • Improved grassland (B4) – 1.07ha;
  • Bare Ground (J4) – 0.27ha; and
  • Quarry (I2.1) – 0.15ha.

The contractor has ecologically enhanced the area to the following:

  • Broadleaved Tree – Scattered (A3.1)- negligible area.
  • Scrub -Scattered (A2.2) – 0.12ha;
  • Grassland – Other neutral grassland – 1.28ha;
  • Heathland and shrub – Gorse scrub – 0.21ha.

A further Biodiversity Net Gain calculation will be complete at Year 1 and Year 3 to determine post-development ecological improvement.
