Carbon Management in Infrastructure Projects

Ferrovial Agroman has recently achieved PAS 2080:2016 certification through Heathrow Projects, the world’s first specification for managing whole-life carbon in infrastructure.

The infrastructure sector is responsible for a significant amount of carbon emissions annually, with the UK Government setting ambitious reduction targets, it is essential to implement a framework for evaluating and managing carbon across the whole infrastructure value chain. Not only does PAS 2080 aim to reduce carbon, it also provides cost savings; delivers a competitive advantage, meeting both Client and Ferrovial Agroman group requirements; and drives a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Key to the implementation of PAS 2080 within projects has been the collaboration of the design, environment and procurement teams to complete carbon assessments. By identifying the carbon hotspots of a project, the team can then work on the implementation of reduction opportunities, which are evaluated using the carbon emissions reduction hierarchy, a decision-making hierarchy of: Build Nothing, Build Less, Build Clever, Build Efficiently. This has resulted in embodied carbon now actively being considered at each stage of the project.

Achieving the PAS2080 verification demonstrates Ferrovial Agroman’s leadership in carbon management, showing a real commitment to tackling the carbon challenge through continual improvement and innovation
