The site have decided to use CarbonCure to assist the site in reducing its carbon footprint.
CarbonCure enables the production of the same reliable concrete but with a reduced carbon footprint. The technology injects a precise dosage of captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) into concrete, where the CO₂ becomes chemically converted into a mineral. Once injected into the concrete mix, the CO₂ reacts with calcium ions from cement to form a nano-sized mineral, Calcium Carbonate, which becomes embedded in the concrete.
The mineralized CO₂ improves the concrete’s compressive strength, enabling producers to safely reduce cement content in their mixes and achieve further carbon reductions without compromising quality. By building with low-carbon building materials—such as CO2 mineralised concrete building owners and developers are able to reduce embodied carbon in buildings and can contribute to a project’s LEED points, as concrete made with CarbonCure provides a 4-6% reduction to Global Warming Potential (GWP).
Readymix concrete sees 25lbs CO ₂ saved per cubic yard (or approx. 15kg per cubic metre). The site have agreed with their concrete supplier that CarbonCure’s equipment will be retrofitted into their concrete plant in one visit. The CarbonCure Valve Box will be connected to the CO₂ tank stored onsite, and will automatically inject a precise dosage of CO₂ into the concrete during mixing.
The CarbonCure Control Box will sync with the plant’s batching software, so adding CO₂ to a mix will be as easy and quick as flipping a switch.
