Converting Christmas Trees into Biomass Fuel

Staff from this construction company supported Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and John Taylor Hospice as part of their Treecycling campaign, helping to collect over 5,500 Christmas trees from local residents across Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull in return for a donation to The Hospice Charity Partnership.

This year’s campaign raised over £100,000, with every pound going directly towards providing expert care for people living in Birmingham with life-limiting illness, as well as supporting their families and loved ones.

The collected trees which are chipped to generate both compost and biomass power, prevent thousands of trees from otherwise going to landfill. Each tree creates around 16kg of CO2 so if all the trees collected in total had finished up in landfill they would have produced a staggering 88,000 kg of C02 or 5.5 tonnes with one tonne equating to the average emission of one passenger on a return-flight from Paris to New York or driving 6,000 km with a diesel car.

Their supply chain partner lent the contractor their van for the weekend free of charge in order to collect the trees.
