Electronic Marker System Marker Balls

This contractor replaced traditional caution tape methods with EMS (Electronic Marker System) marker balls to enhance the identification and traceability of underground services.

Each marker ball is filled with a liquid that emits a signal containing key information, such as depth, service type, and surrounding conditions, which can be detected by a CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) user. This system is specifically designed for non-metallic and plastic services, which are typically difficult to trace using conventional methods.

Unlike caution tape, which provides only visual surface-level warnings, this solution embeds traceable data directly into the ground. It enables precise location and classification of buried services, reducing the risk of accidental damage and improving safety during excavation and maintenance activities.

It has the potential to be widely adopted across infrastructure and utility sectors, leading to safer, more efficient, and more accountable groundworks and service management practices.
