Jersey Cudweed

45 Millharbour is one of the few sites in the UK that contains Jersey Cudweed – a protected species of wild plant which was found growing naturally on the site prior to the project commencing.

In order to protect this species, the project team set up an action plan with an ecologist from Greengage to ensure that the plant was protected throughout. This entailed:

  • The ecologist picking the plant before any hard landscaping was removed in September 2014. The plant pickings had been in storage on-site ready for transplant and seed spreading with the new scheme.
  • Excavation and storage of 16, 1 tonne bags of sand that the original block paving was laid on, which contains the seed. These have been stored on-site since the start of the project ready for seed spreading in the new scheme.
  • Areas designed in the new scheme on the 13th floor brown roof where the sand and seeds will be spread in order for the Cudweed seeds to cultivate.

The ecologist has been monitoring the seed with visits every few months and will be in attendance to supervise the seed and sand spreading when the brown roofs are ready.
